Varzim, Portugal, Kiao Fang is a Sunbird 32 six berth
cruiser built as a dedicated junk rig in 1977 - one of only
fifteen built. Length overall: 32.5 ft (9.9 m). Beam 10.3 ft (3.15 m) Length at Waterline: 26.1 ft (8 m). Draft 4 ft (1.2 m) Sail areas: 559 sq ft (Fore 225 sq ft + Main 334 sq ft) Displacement: 10100 lb (4600 kg). Kiao Fang has carried us to Ireland, Scotland, Portugal and
Spain, and we have felt secure and cared for in her. She has
been extensively strengthened and modified to make her a
comfortable, capable, and above all, safe cruising home. Topsides, we have added a wind steering system on a strengthened transom; a wind generator, solar panel and radar all on a stainless steel frame; rejigged and strengthened the bow to incorporate a pair of beefed up rollers and added a hefty cleat. We fitted a lightweight doghouse which supports two further solar panels. Internally she has been extensively rewired and a second battery bank added; a shore power 230v loop incorporated; the navigation, computing, weather and radio instrumentation upgraded; all gas removed and replaced by Taylor kerosene heater and cooker; fridge in the forepeak; water tank replaced by a set of isolatable re-sited polypropylene tanks and replumbed; refloored, with new pitch pine bearers; re-upholstered, and all windows and hatches rebuilt. The fuel tank has been shifted to allow a large capacity kerosene tank to be added. Below the waterline we have added a rope cutter on a new shaft, and a stainless steel keel shoe to complement the yacht legs (and to give a bit of protection if we touch). The foremast and both mast steps and partners have been rebuilt, and all rigging replaced. The hull has been copper-coated, applied over an extra 6 coats of epoxy as a precautionary measure. We are selling Kiao Fang with an extensive inventory, but for those with more ambitious needs, we are also offering an extended cruising inventory. |
