Glasson Basin Wind and
Waves
Glasson Basin needs solid moorings. As can be seen from
the video clips below, winds can build up waves to a surprising degree.
This is not a sheltered inland canal marina: it is a small lake just at
the edge of an exposed western coast.
Here is a clip of the canal as it enters the basin. The far
wall at the extreme left is where 60 narrowboat moorings are planned,
on a floating pontoon with
finger berths at right angles to the breeze.
Even with well constructed two
pile jetties affording secure fore and aft mooring end on to the
prevailing westerlies, damage is far from unknown, and berthing can be
problematic even in lighter airs. This is the (sheltered!) end of
one of the jetties.
